| Flood Situation in Bangkok – City Unaffected & AsB 2011 to proceed as planned | |||||||||
The 7th Asian Bitumen 2011 taking place in Bangkok at the Siam Kempinski will proceed as planned. The organisers (and our hosts/local sponsor Thai Oil Group and TIPCO Asphalt) have been closely monitoring the situation on the ground and are pleased to advise that Bangkok is safe, with the city having passed through the crucial high risk period (coinciding with seasonal high tide) over the weekend (October 14-17) mostly untouched. Heavy rains showered the capital for much of the day Sunday, but life was otherwise normal with shopping malls open and elevated trains crisscrossing the city. The areas of central BANGKOK where tourists normally go are not flooded and fully accessible. Everything continues as normal for both visitors and Bangkok residents in these areas. Most of the flooding now taking place is in provinces to the north and east of Bangkok. Almost all of the Bangkok Metropolitan Area is protected by a complex system of flood walls, levees, canals, dikes and underground drainage tunnels that are helping divert vast pools of runoff south into the Gulf of Thailand. The city government is using this network to manage the water flow and minimize flooding in the city. All airports throughout Thailand, including Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, have not been affected by the floods and are operating as per usual.
