This one-day course offers a comprehensive insight into the basic design, construction, and operation of LNG storage tanks, expounding on the fundamentals of cryogenic storage and the safety features inherent in above-ground LNG tanks.

Mantle Consultant Associates focuses on providing advice and technical assistance primarily within the storage tank industry with our Course Leader Dr Brian Quinn having more than 40 years’ experience and expertise in the international storage tankage business industry. A Chartered Mechanical Engineer from the University of West Scotland, Dr Brian Quinn is a specialist in the use of aluminium alloys in complex Aluminium structures and has provided independent and practical advice on a complicated subject to many companies in the UK, Middle East and Asia, on the design and operation of storage tanks.

Prior to starting Mantle Consultant Associates, Dr Brian Quinn worked at Toyo Kanetsu KK (TKK) as the GM for the Middle East in Abu Dhabi, Resident Engineer of Mobil Oil based in Norway and Site Manager/Project Manager for Motherwell Bridge Engineering based in the UK and UAE.

• Full Containment

Single - consists of a single wall or shell enclosing the LNG storage volume. Double - consists of an inner tank (primary container) surrounded by an outer tank (secondary container), providing an additional layer of protection against leaks or spills. Full - features both an inner tank and an outer tank, with the space between them serving as a containment area. This design offers the highest level of safety and environmental protection.

• Insulation

The base slab provides a stable foundation for the LNG tank and distributes the load evenly to the underlying soil or piles. Piles are driven deep into the ground to support the weight of the LNG tank and transfer loads to deeper, more stable soil layers. Insulation may be applied to the tank foundation to minimize heat transfer from the ground and prevent frost heave or settlement

• Internal 9% Ni Steel

• External Prestressed Concrete

• Insulation 

The internal shell of the LNG tank is typically made of 9% Ni steel to withstand low temperatures and maintain structural integrity. The external shell of the LNG tank may be constructed using prestressed concrete to provide additional strength and protection against environmental factors. Insulation is applied to the tank shell to minimize heat transfer and maintain the cryogenic temperature of the LNG inside

• Insulation

The inner roof is suspended from the top of the tank shell and may be insulated to prevent heat ingress. The outer roof is typically made of reinforced concrete and provides protection against weather and external forces. Insulation is applied to the tank roof to minimize heat transfer and maintain the low temperature required for LNG storage.

• Hydrotest
• Boil Off

Assesses the structural integrity of the LNG tank by pressurizing it with water to a specified level and checking for leaks or deformation. Boil off maintains safe operating conditions and prevents excessive vapor pressure buildup

• Includes sensors, gauges, and control systems installed on the LNG tank to monitor parameters such as temperature, pressure, and liquid level
• Equipment fitted include valves, fittings, and connections used for loading, unloading, and transferring LNG to and from the tank
